Delta Airlines Name Spelling Correction Rules

Delta Airlines allows passengers to correct minor spelling mistakes in their names to ensure tickets match valid travel documents. These corrections generally include fixing a single character, adjusting misplaced initials, or resolving small formatting errors. Most spelling corrections can be handled through Delta’s reservations team, the official website, or directly at the ticket counter.

In most cases, a complete ticket reissue is not required for minor fixes, though certain fare types may involve a small service fee. For major updates, such as a legal name change after marriage or divorce, passengers must provide supporting documents and follow Delta’s name change policy. To avoid last-minute issues at check-in, review your ticket confirmation immediately after booking and request corrections as early as possible.

Name change policy for domestic and international tickets

 When to Contact Delta for Name Corrections

You must contact Global Sales Support or Delta Reservations for help with name corrections if any of the following apply:

- The itinerary includes flights operated by another airline (e.g., Aeromexico, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, LATAM, Virgin Atlantic) 

- The travel includes China or India

- More than three letters in the passenger’s last name need to be corrected

- The name has already been corrected once, and another correction is needed (requiring a second reissue)

General Guidelines for Minor Name Corrections

Most small name corrections can be made without contacting Delta. Make sure to follow these rules to avoid any issues or cancellation:

- The ticket must be issued on Delta 006 stock

- All flights must be operated by Delta (including Delta Connection flights)

- Only one name correction (and reissue) is allowed per passenger

- The corrected name must still refer to the same person as on the original booking

- The Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) must remain unchanged

Correction of first or middle name 

 Travel agent have authority to to correct your first or middle name and reissue the ticket without without a waiver code 

- Correct the name in PNR 

- Leaving a OSI  message to the PNR advising a name correction has been made

           OSI DL NAME CORRECTION TO FIRST/MIDDLE NAME ONLY

- Reissue the ticket (no other changes to flights/dates are allowed)

• No wavier  code required 

Correction of Last Name

 Travel agents are allowed to correct the last name and reissue the ticket without a waiver code, but only under the following condition:

1. Up to 3 characters in the last name can be corrected

       2. If more than 3 characters need to be changed, the agent must contact Global Sales Support

Steps:

1. Correct the name in the PNR

2. Add this OSI message to the PNR:

   OSI DL NAME CORRECTION TO 3 LETTERS OF LAST NAME ONLY

3. Reissue the ticket as an even exchange (no changes to flights or dates)

4. No waiver code is required

Adding a Second Last Name (No Name Replacement)

 If the passenger wants to add a second last name (not replace the current one), agents can proceed without a waiver.

Example:

SMITH/ELIZABETH → SMITHANDERSON/ELIZABETH

Steps:

1. Correct the name in the PNR

2. Add this OSI message to the PNR:

   OSI DL NAME CORRECTION ADDED SECOND NAME TO LAST NAME

3. Reissue the ticket as an even exchange

4. No waiver code is required

First and Last Names Inverted

 If the first and last names were swapped during booking, travel agents can fix the error without a waiver code.

Example:

TAYLOR/ROSS → ROSS/TAYLOR

Steps:

1. Correct the name in the PNR

2. Add this OSI message to the PNR:

    OSI DL NAME CORRECTION FIRST AND LAST NAME INVERTED

1. Reissue the ticket as an even exchange

2. No waiver code is required

Important!  If a middle name, initial or title (e.g. MR, MS, MRS) is included in the name field and the first and last names are inverted you will need to contact Delta for assistance.

Common mistake 

 Delta Airlines charges a name change or correction fee that depends on the timing of the request and the type of correction needed:

- If you request a name change within 24 hours of booking, the fee is $125.

- If the 24-hour window has passed, the fee increases to $275.

- Fare difference: If a new ticket is issued after the name change and your flight details change, you will also need to pay any applicable fare difference.

- Minor spelling corrections made early may not always incur a fee, especially if the correction is small and done well before the travel date. However, more significant changes or those requested closer to departure can result in higher charges.

- For some non-refundable tickets, minor corrections may be allowed without significant fees, but this can vary by fare type and route

Method – Name Change via GDS (by Travel Agent)

Step 1 – Ensure the ticket is Delta?stock (006) and all flights are Delta?operated.

Step 2 – Verify only one name correction/reissue is being done and that the same passenger remains on the booking.

Step 3 – Determine the type of name correction:

- First or Middle Name: Up to full name change

- Last Name: Only up to 3 letters (if more, contact Global Sales)

- Add to Last Name: e.g., SMITH → SMITHANDERSON

- Invert First/Last Name: e.g., TAYLOR/ROSS → ROSS/TAYLOR

Step 4 – In the PNR, update the name based on the selected correction type.

Step 5 – Add the relevant OSI message:

- First/middle name changes:

• OSI DL NAME CORRECTION TO FIRST/MIDDLE NAME ONLY

- Last name (≤3 letters):

          OSI DL NAME CORRECTION TO 3 LETTERS OF LAST NAME ONLY

- Add second surname:

• OSI DL NAME CORRECTION ADDED SECOND NAME TO LAST NAME 

- Correct inverted name 

1. OSI DL NAME CORRECTION FIRST AND LAST NAME INVERTED

Step 6 – Reissue the ticket as an even exchange (no other flight/date changes).

Step 7 – No waiver code is required.

Step 8 – If the PNR contains Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD), note that the existing SSR DOCS will be removed. The agent must re-enter SSR DOCS with the updated name.
